Title of dissertation: FAST SOLVERS FOR MODELS OF FLUID FLOW WITH SPECTRAL ELEMENTS P. Aaron Lott, Doctor of Philosophy, 2008 Dissertation directed by: Professor Howard Elman Department of Computer Science Institute for Advanced Computer Studies & Associate Research Professor Anil Deane Institute for Physical Sciences and Technology We introduce a preconditioning technique based on Domain Decomposition and the Fast Diagonalization Method that can be applied to tensor product based discretizations of the steady convection-diffusion and the linearized Navier-Stokes equations. The method is based on iterative substructuring where fast diagonalization is used to efficiently eliminate the interior degrees of freedom and subsidiary subdomain solves. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this preconditioner in numerical simulations using a spectral element discretization. This work extends the use of Fast Diagonalization to steady convection-diffusion systems. We also extend the “least-squares commutator” preconditioner, originally developed for the finite element method [19], to a matrix-free spectral element framework. We show that these two advances, when used together, allow for efficient computation of steady-state solutions the the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using high-order spectral element discretizations. Viscous Models Comparison in Water Impact of Twin 2D Falling Wedges Simulation by Different Numerical Solvers

In this paper, symmetric water entry of twin wedges is investigated for deadrise angle of 30 degree. Three numerical simulation of a symmetric impact, considering rigid body dynamic equations of motion in two-phase flow is presented. The two-phase flow around the wedges is solved by Finite Element based on Finite Volume method (FEM-FVM) which is used in conjunction with Volume of Fluid (VOF) sc...

A Fast Immersed Boundary Fourier Pseudo-spectral Method for Simulation of the Incompressible Flows

Abstract   The present paper is devoted to implementation of the immersed boundary technique into the Fourier pseudo-spectral solution of the vorticity-velocity formulation of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The immersed boundary conditions are implemented via direct modification of the convection and diffusion terms, and therefore, in contrast to some other similar ...

LES/FMDF of premixed methane/air flow in a backward-facing step combustor

In the present study, a hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian methodology is utilized for large eddy simulation (LES) of premixed fuel/air flow over a three-dimensional backward facing step (BFS). The fluid dynamic features are obtained by solving the Eulerian filtered compressible transport equations while the species are predicted by using the filtered mass density function method (FMDF).  Some scalar f...

On interrelation between fast solvers for spectral and hierarchical p elements

Preconditioners for the internal sriffness matrices of the spectral and hierarchical (with the coordinate polynomials produced by the tensor products of the integrated Legendre’s polynomials) reference elements are considered. It is shown that fast preconditioners-solvers for the reference elements of one type may be easily adapted to the other type with the same in the order arithmetical compl...
